I am a highly experienced mental health nurse, who has worked in Scotland and Australia. I have worked for approximately 35 years in various areas of the mental health and alcohol/other drug field. Currently I work as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in mental health within the public health system, where a major part of my role involves providing individual and group clinical supervision and running a well-regarded clinical supervision training course.
In my private practice, I offer clinical supervision (individual and group), training, consultancy and supervising the supervisor for health care professionals. I work with both Government and Non-Government Organisations.
Additionally I offer my services to those working within the veterinary field, animal shelters and welfare organisations.
Clinical supervision has been something I've engaged in for most of my career in mental health and also as a requirement for the various counselling modalities I have studied. My personal experience of receiving clinical supervision has included face to face clinical supervision (using different models of clinical supervision), group clinical supervision, and peer group supervision. I'm an advanced trainee in psychodrama which enables me to use creative methods and role theory in the supervisory relationship.
I've been very fortunate to have had training in group work with Max Clayton and Stephen Rollnick and various experts in the area of clinical supervision, including Michael Carroll, Sue O'Sullivan, Aly McNicol , Annette Fisher and Paul Spurr.
These people (probably unknowingly) have influenced my practice.
I am very passionate about clinical supervision. I believe it has made me the clinician and person I am. It has taught me the power of reflecting, and assisted me through some of the challenges and tricky situations that we all experience in our roles. It has helped me through periods that I have been fatigued, preventing me from burnout. It has also made me recognise some of the "wins" in my role and the importance of self-care.
In addition to working in mental health, I provide volunteer work for various animal shelters. Through my volunteer work I have found it evident that working with animals isn't much different than working with humans. Both fields involve emotional connections that are simultaneously rewarding and challenging. Those working with animals also benefit from clinical supervision which is why I offer this as part of my service.
As a clinical supervisor my aim is to build a professional and supportive working relationship where you feel safe to bring your client work for reflection, clarification, challenge and insight . I adapt my supervisory / relational skills to fit the needs of the supervisee(s) to accompany them through the ups and downs of their working life.
